A bold new venture is taking shape in the heart of Los Angeles, and it's set to revolutionize the way we think about data centers and optical communications. The future of AI and data processing is at stake, and these SpaceX veterans are leading the charge.

Travis Brashears, Cameron Ramos, and Serena Grown-Haeberli, former collaborators at SpaceX, have embarked on an exciting journey with their startup, Mesh Optical Technologies. With a $50 million Series A funding round led by Thrive Capital, they're aiming to disrupt the optical transceiver market and reshape the landscape of data center technology.

But here's where it gets controversial: the trio realized the limitations of the current market while working on SpaceX's compute-intensive satellite projects. They saw an opportunity to mass-produce optical transceivers, devices that bridge the gap between optical signals and electrical signals for computers. And they're not alone in recognizing the potential; AOI, a U.S. supplier, recently secured a $4 billion contract to provide components for AWS data centers, highlighting the growing demand for these devices.

"When someone boasts about a million GPU cluster, they often overlook the fact that it requires four to five times more transceivers," Brashears explains. This insight led them to set an ambitious goal: manufacturing a thousand units per day within a year, positioning themselves for bulk orders in 2027 and 2028.

The optical transceiver market is currently dominated by Chinese firms, but Mesh sees an opportunity to build a more resilient supply chain outside of China. While trade restrictions haven't impacted the market yet, the founders and their investors are taking a proactive approach to address potential national security concerns.

"If AI is indeed the most important technology of our generation (as we believe), having critical AI data center components sourced from misaligned or competitive countries is a problem," writes Thrive Partner Philip Clark. "Mesh is our solution for better interconnects to keep AI scaling."

The challenge for Mesh lies in implementing automated, lights-out manufacturing techniques, an expertise largely concentrated in China. Even European equipment suppliers expect Chinese customers, highlighting the need for Mesh to develop its own expertise.

By co-locating design and production, Mesh aims to create more efficient and cost-effective components. Their current design eliminates a power-hungry component, potentially reducing GPU cluster power usage by 3% to 5%, a significant improvement for hyperscalers seeking maximum efficiency.

But Mesh's aspirations go beyond data centers. They envision optical wavelength communications as the next paradigm, a transition from radio frequencies to photonics. "We want to be at the forefront of this transition," Brashears tells TechCrunch. "Our goal is to interconnect everything, not just computers, and we're starting with data centers."
