The heatwave that hit Perth last month has left its mark on the region's mango farms, with growers witnessing a significant drop in quantity. However, they assure that the quality remains top-notch. Brian Middleton, a seasoned mango farmer, expects his yield to be half of what it usually is. But here's the silver lining: you can now enjoy a truly unique farm-to-table experience!
At Perth Mango Farm, visitors can hand-pick their mangoes directly from the trees and even indulge in a tasty sample along the way. It's an adventure for the whole family, and with the farm now technically within the metropolitan region, it's easily accessible.
But here's where it gets controversial: the farm's popular Kensington Pride variety, also known as bowen, will cost you. The picking fee remains at $10 per person, but the price per kilogram has soared to $15 due to the reduced harvest. This early fruit, affected by the intense heat, is still mostly green, making it ideal for those who want to make mango pickle.
Despite the higher prices, Mr. Middleton assures that the fruit is worth the wait. The best, juiciest mangoes will be ready for picking around the end of March, and the trees will likely be bare by mid-April. With up to 300 people visiting each day, the farm expects to sell out in just four to five weeks.
A delicate balance between supply and demand: Mr. Middleton explains, "We've had to increase prices to slow demand and ensure we don't run out too quickly."
