Roxanna Scott is stepping into a newly created role, becoming the top editor at ESPN. This means she'll be overseeing all of ESPN's TV and digital newsgathering, including the crucial areas of investigative reporting and enterprise journalism. Her official title will be SVP, Editor-in-Chief. She'll be working from the company's headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, and will report to Dave Roberts.
Scott's background is impressive. She spent nearly 20 years at USA Today as a sports editor, including three years as an executive editor and VP. More recently, she was the managing editor of the daily desk at The Athletic. This wealth of experience suggests a serious commitment to quality journalism at ESPN.
But here's where it gets interesting... ESPN declined to comment on the hiring, and Scott hasn't yet made a statement.
On the digital side, ESPN has seen some changes in its editorial ranks this year. Executive editor Cristina Daglas was placed on administrative leave following HR complaints and ultimately left the company. Daglas has since taken a role with the Wizards and the Mystics. Senior deputy editor Elizabeth Baugh also departed amid the investigation, moving into marketing, communications, and branding at Ring Magazine. Heather Burns, the senior deputy editor for NFL coverage, also left ESPN. This turnover raises questions about the internal dynamics and the direction of the editorial department.
Scott's hiring marks a return to a familiar structure for ESPN. Before, Vince Doria, former sports editor of the Boston Globe, held a similar leadership role for many years. Doria retired in 2015.
