Breaking: Ken Ofori-Atta’s Lawyers Challenge ICE Detention in U.S. Court - Full Legal Update (2026)

Breaking News: Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is currently in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), sparking a legal battle. This situation has quickly become a focal point, raising questions and concerns. But what exactly is happening, and what are the next steps? Let's dive in.

Legal proceedings have been launched in the United States to challenge the detention of Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Minister of Finance. According to Frank Davies, a member of Ofori-Atta's legal team, the legal challenge is underway. Davies revealed this information during a Joy Prime interview on January 10, 2026.

Davies confirmed that Ofori-Atta is currently in ICE custody. His legal team, in collaboration with U.S.-based lawyers, has taken action to contest the detention in court. "Ken Ofori-Atta has been picked up by ICE. We all know he is in custody. What every diligent lawyer would do is to assure himself or herself of the process’s attendant on the custody," Davies explained.

The legal challenge has been formally filed and is scheduled to be heard later in January 2026. "The lawyers in America have filed a process in court… A process has been filed in court to challenge his custody in ICE detention. That process would be heard later this month," Davies stated. This coordinated strategy involves close collaboration between the Ghana-based legal team and their counterparts in the United States. "That is why we are here as his lawyers, because we have a collaboration and a teamwork with American lawyers," Davies added.

Davies reiterated that the matter is now before the court and awaiting a decision. "The position now is that the lawyers in America have filed a process in court to challenge what ICE have done, and that process will be dealt with very, very soon. So, that is the latest on the matter," he concluded.

And this is the part most people miss... ICE had medically cleared Ofori-Atta for detention, according to Ghana’s US Ambassador.

Here's where it gets controversial... This situation raises several questions. What are the specific grounds for Ofori-Atta's detention? What legal arguments will his team present? How might this case impact international relations? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
